Challenge

As conventional agriculture is failing to provide a sustainable supply of healthy food to the growing population, destroying topsoil at an alarming rate and producing enormous CO2 emissions, there is a need to enable agriculture to transition towards sustainable and even regenerative practice. The target is to ensure a more resilient and productive industry that is less resource-intensive and produces fewer emissions while sequestering significant amounts of CO2.

Solutions provided

The project proposes four key processes:

  • non-invasive crop inspection with drone-mounted hyperspectral sensors and satellites;
  • data processing to establish plant condition;
  • growth predictions and precise fertiliser application maps to achieve optimum growth;
  • integration to farm machinery for automated fertiliser application.

Exploiting satellite radar data enables scanning up to 30 cm into soil, monitoring land variability and land surface conditions, providing real-time data every 3 days. Insights are generated for adequate response/implementation for different soil types.

Consortium strength

The multidisciplinary teams from the two organisations complement each other in terms of expertise concerning the agri-food market sector, drones, robots, advanced analytics of big data, advanced algorithms development (AI) and business development. The consortium is led by Termodron, which is also more focused on application, while Elif Lab focuses on extracting value from the available data to increase the effectiveness of the solution with predictable outcomes, monitoring and processes automation.

DigiFed supports the project through continual monitoring and innovation management.

Business development

The exploitation is planned through value offered by opening-up conservation and regenerative agriculture interventions in addition to the current precision agriculture offer. The scalable solution (Software as a Service – SaaS platform) delivers predictive modelling and decision support across a broad range of interventions. The resulting economic benefits are measurable through cost reduction at the farm level. The associated environmental impact is significant in terms of damage limitation to the environment and active regeneration of natural capital. From the social perspective, the project offers improvements concerning the standard of living across the industry and guaranteeing a sustainable food supply chain.

Companies involved

Termodron’s knowledge helps farmers practice the possibilities of digitalisation and data analysis. The company’s story starts in 2018 with early trials on wheat fertilisation using drone-driven multispectral images. Due to efficient results and a constant drive for learning, Termodron collaborates with some of the largest Slovenian farms and agriculture companies, and keep expanding basic and additional services.
