Challenge
The main expectation on these IoT smart-agriculture applications concerns the possibility of optimizing (and reducing) some strategic production inputs such as chemical phytosanitary treatments. However, these first IoT applications, although they create great expectations in the agriculture sector, do not always succeed in their intent. One of the critical points concerns the availability and reliability of the disease prediction-models (row data from sensors are not enough to archive benefits) and their adaptability (tuning and training) to the different cases of application that exist in agricultural and viticultural contexts (variability of soils, plant genetics, microclimates).
Solutions provided
WiForAgri2022 is an innovative Cyber-physical System (CPS) for Smart Agriculture application (IoT modules + Predictive models Cloud platform). It is a technological solution for an advanced monitoring and management of downy mildew (Plasmapora Viticola disease) in vineyards. It is innovative because it combines in a unique way weather data with specific sensors and algorithms for downy mildew. The proposed solution intends to increase the degree of precision and accuracy of the downy mildew monitoring and management system by designing and implementing specific IoT modules that consider fundamental parameters, which will be integrated into a mathematical Decision Support System (DSS) model that simulates the development of the pathogen by generating an indicator risk and opportunities for phytosanitary treatment.
Consortium strength
Primo Principio (2P) is an Italian SME (2011) that offers digital solutions to agriculture and the rural world. After years of R&D activities and feedback from the market, it currently works in Italy and Slovenia with around 150 customers amongst farmers, public agencies for agricultural development, universities, and research centers (WiForAgri.com). It relies on a multidisciplinary team composed of telecommunications engineers, computer scientists, agronomists, and innovation managers. The DIGIFED project partner is the University of Ljubljana which has been involved in the project for its experience and expertise in the field of IoT Prototyping and predictive model development. The expected support will concern a general high-level supervision of the design activities of the IoT nodes and their integration into a single data analysis platform using predictive mathematical models. The sought-after experience will allow guidance and advice aimed at quickly but efficiently experimenting with an innovative and personalized IoT solution before a real test on the market.
Business development
An advanced CPS solution such as WiForAgri2022 would break down these barriers and win the market. To make this possible the following are needed: new hardware, new ad hoc integrated sensors (double page leaf wetness; multispectral sensor for canopy estimation, specific soil humidity and temperature sensor optimized for oospore estimation); a new software (new mathematical predictive model that takes into account the new parameters and AI-based user feedback system) integrated in a unique economically sustainable solution.
